Why You Must Finish Your Root Canal Treatment (Even if the Pain is Gone)

3 April 2026

You had an unbearable toothache, visited the emergency dentist, and had the first stage of a root canal. The infected nerve was removed, a temporary filling was placed, and finally, the severe pain is gone.

Because the tooth no longer hurts, it can be incredibly tempting to cancel your follow-up appointment. You might think, “If it doesn’t hurt, it must be fixed, right?” Unfortunately, this is one of the biggest -and most expensive- mistakes patients make. At Twilight Dental in Leeds, we frequently see patients who skipped their second appointment, only to return months later with a fractured tooth that now needs to be extracted.

Here is exactly why you must finish your root canal treatment, even if you feel 100% better.

The Illusion of a “Cured” Tooth

To understand why completing the treatment is essential, you need to know what happened during your first visit (Stage 1).

To get you out of pain, the dentist opened the tooth, removed the inflamed and dying nerve, and placed a medication inside. They then sealed the hole with a temporary filling.

The pain is gone because the nerve is gone. However, the tooth is now hollow, and the temporary filling is not designed to last. It is simply a short-term bandage.

What Happens If You Don’t Go Back?

  1. The Infection Will Return (And It Will Be Worse) Temporary fillings are porous and designed to last only a few weeks. Over time, they begin to leak or wash away with saliva and chewing. Once that seal breaks, the bacteria from your mouth will flood back into the hollow root canals. Because the tooth has no nerve, you won’t feel the cavity forming, but the infection will quietly spread into your jawbone, causing a massive, silent dental abscess.
  2. The Tooth Will Snap in Half A tooth that has had its nerve and blood supply removed becomes brittle and fragile, much like a dry twig. Without the final stage of the root canal—which involves reinforcing the hollow inside and placing a permanent, strong restoration (like a permanent filling or crown)—the tooth cannot withstand the heavy forces of chewing. If the tooth splits down the middle or breaks below the gum line, it cannot be saved. Your only option will be an extraction.
  3. You Waste Your Time and Money You have already invested time, money, and effort into getting out of pain and starting the process of saving your natural tooth. If you skip the completion stage and the tooth fractures or reinfects, that initial investment is entirely wasted. An extraction and a subsequent implant or bridge will cost significantly more than simply finishing the root canal.

What Does “Completion of Root Canal” Involve?

The second visit (Stage 2) is crucial but usually very straightforward and painless—especially since the tooth no longer has a nerve!

During this appointment, your dentist will:

  • Remove the temporary filling.
  • Thoroughly clean and shape the root canals one last time to ensure no bacteria remain.
  • Permanently seal the canals with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha to prevent future infections.
  • Rebuild the tooth with a permanent, durable filling (or prepare it for a protective crown).

Once this is done, your tooth is fully protected, sealed, and restored to its full function.

Don’t Lose Your Tooth Just Because the Pain Stopped

A pain-free tooth is not necessarily a safe tooth. If you have had the first stage of a root canal—whether with us or at another clinic—it is vital that you book your completion appointment before the temporary filling fails.

At Twilight Dental, we make the Completion of Root Canal process smooth, comfortable, and efficient.
