Hygienist, Scale and Polish in Leeds
A hygiene visit removes the hardened plaque that brushing cannot shift, treats bleeding gums before they become gum disease, and lifts surface staining from tea, coffee and smoking. Twilight Dental offers hygiene appointments at our clinic in Woodhouse, Leeds, with evening slots seven days a week.
What a hygiene visit includes
- Assessment of your gums, including bleeding and pocket measurements where appropriate.
- Removal of plaque and calculus above and, where needed, below the gum line.
- Stain removal and polishing, which is what most people notice immediately.
- Advice tailored to your mouth, not a generic leaflet — which brush, which interdental size, which technique.
- A recall interval based on your gum condition and risk, not a fixed six months for everyone.
- A new patient exam and hygiene bundle is available — ask reception when you book.
Why bleeding gums matter
Gums that bleed when you brush are inflamed, and inflammation is not normal. Left alone, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, where the bone supporting the teeth is lost permanently. It is usually painless until it is advanced, which is why teeth can feel fine right up to the point they start to loosen. Bone that has been lost does not grow back, so the value of hygiene treatment is entirely in catching it early.
What we look for
Bleeding on probing
The earliest reliable sign of gum inflammation.
Pocket depths
How far the gum has detached from the tooth, measured in millimetres.
Calculus
Hardened deposits that hold plaque against the gum and cannot be brushed off.
Recession
Gum that has shrunk back, exposing sensitive root surface.
Staining
Surface colour from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking.
Risk factors
Smoking, diabetes and a family history all raise the risk and change the recall interval.
Between appointments
- Brush for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and spit rather than rinse.
- Clean between every tooth daily — interdental brushes of the right size beat floss for most adults.
- An electric brush with a pressure sensor helps if you brush hard.
- Do not stop cleaning an area because it bleeds; bleeding settles within a couple of weeks of proper cleaning.
- If you smoke, know that it masks bleeding, so gum disease progresses silently.
Keeping it up
Regular hygiene visits are what protect the work you have already paid for — crowns, implants and bonding all fail at the margins when the gums are neglected. If you would rather spread the cost of check-ups and hygiene across the year, our membership plans include them for a fixed monthly fee.
Hygiene appointments — your questions answered
Does a scale and polish hurt?
It can be a little uncomfortable if your gums are inflamed or roots are exposed, and we can numb the area if needed. It is much easier when you come regularly.
How often should I see a hygienist?
It depends on your gum health and risk factors. Some people need three-monthly visits, others do well annually. We will recommend an interval and explain why.
Will it whiten my teeth?
It removes surface staining, which often makes teeth look noticeably brighter, but it does not change the underlying shade. That is whitening.
My gums bleed a lot. Should I brush less?
No, the opposite. Bleeding is a sign of inflammation caused by plaque. Careful, consistent cleaning settles it, usually within two weeks.
Can hygiene treatment cure gum disease?
It can arrest it and prevent further bone loss, and gums can become healthy again. Bone that has already been lost does not come back.
Do you offer evening hygiene appointments?
Yes. We are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
