What Counts as a Dental Emergency? (And When to Wait)

9 February 2026

Are you experiencing dental pain but unsure if it requires an immediate visit? It can be difficult to distinguish between a standard dental problem and a situation that needs urgent attention.

At Twilight Dental, we want to ensure you get the right care at the right time. Here is a guide to help you decide if you need to call our emergency line or if you can book a regular appointment.

1. Signs You Need an Emergency Dentist (Call Us Immediately)

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you likely have a dental emergency that requires prompt treatment to save your tooth or stop an infection:

  • Severe Toothache: Unbearable pain that doesn’t subside with over-the-counter painkillers.
  • Abscess or Facial Swelling: Swelling in the gums or face is a sign of serious infection. This is a major “red flag” and should never be ignored.
  • Knocked-Out Tooth: If an adult tooth has been knocked out, time is critical. Seeing a dentist within 30 minutes increases the chance of saving the tooth.
  • Cracked Tooth: A severe crack can expose the nerve and lead to infection.
  • Lost Crown or Veneer: While not always painful, losing a restoration leaves your underlying tooth vulnerable and affects your smile.
  • Difficulty Breathing: Note: If swelling is obstructing your breathing, please proceed to A&E or call emergency services immediately.

2. What is NOT a Dental Emergency? (Can Wait for a Regular Slot)

Some dental issues, while annoying or uncomfortable, do not require same-day emergency treatment. You can usually wait for the next available routine appointment for:

  • Minor Toothache: Dull pain that is manageable with painkillers.
  • Small Painless Chipped Tooth: If there is no pain and the chip is small/cosmetic, it is not an emergency.
  • Loose Orthodontic Wires: A bracket or wire that feels loose but isn’t causing injury can wait.
  • Mild Bleeding Gums: Bleeding when brushing is often a sign of gingivitis, which needs treatment but isn’t an overnight emergency.
