Knocked-Out Tooth? You Have 30 Minutes to Save It (Step-by-Step Guide)

13 February 2026

Seeing a permanent tooth knocked out (avulsed) during sports or an accident is terrifying. However, permanent teeth can often be saved if you act quickly and calmly.

Time is your biggest enemy here. There is a “Golden Window” of about 30 minutes where the chances of successful reimplantation are highest.

At Twilight Dental, we urge you to follow these 5 emergency steps immediately before rushing to our clinic.

Step 1: Pick It Up by the Crown (White Part)

Find the tooth immediately. DO NOT touch the root (the yellow pointed part that was under the gum). The root contains delicate cells needed for reattachment. If you touch them, they may die.

Step 2: Clean It Gently (NO Tap Water!)

If the tooth is dirty, lick it clean or rinse it briefly with milk or saline solution.

  • WARNING: Do NOT use tap water if possible, and NEVER scrub the tooth or use soap/alcohol. Tap water can damage the root cells due to chlorine and lack of minerals.

Step 3: Try to Put It Back In

For an adult (permanent) tooth, the best place for it is back in its socket.

  1. Gently push the tooth back into the hole (ensure it is facing the right way).
  1. Bite down on a clean handkerchief or tea towel to hold it in place.
  1. Come to us immediately.

Step 4: Can’t Put It Back? Store It in Milk

If you cannot reinsert the tooth, you must keep it moist to keep the cells alive.

  • Best Option: Place the tooth in a cup of fresh cold milk.
  • Second Option: Place it inside your cheek (be careful not to swallow it).
  • Don’t: Do not store it in water or a dry tissue. The tooth will dry out and die within minutes.

Step 5: Call Us Immediately

Speed is critical. Contact Twilight Dental right away. We prioritize trauma cases like this to give you the best chance of saving your natural smile.

Important Note for Children (Baby Teeth):

If the knocked-out tooth is a baby tooth, do NOT try to put it back in. Doing so can damage the adult tooth growing underneath. Put the tooth in milk and bring the child to us to check for other injuries.
