What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding is a cosmetic treatment in which a dentist applies a tooth-coloured resin to the surface of a tooth, sculpts it by hand into the desired shape, and sets it hard with a curing light. The material is the same family of composite used for white fillings, chosen to match the shade of your natural teeth, and it bonds chemically to enamel.

Because the resin is added rather than the tooth being cut down, bonding is one of the least invasive ways to change how your teeth look. It is done freehand in the chair, so there are no laboratory stages, no temporaries and no second visit for fitting.

What composite bonding can fix

What happens at your appointment

1. Consultation and assessment. We check the health of the teeth and gums first, take any X-rays needed, and talk through what bonding can and cannot achieve for your case.
2. Shade matching. We select a composite shade against your natural teeth in good light, sometimes layering more than one shade for a natural result.
3. Preparation. The tooth surface is cleaned and lightly conditioned so the resin bonds securely. In most cases no drilling and no anaesthetic are needed.
4. Sculpting and curing. The composite is placed in layers, shaped by hand and set with a curing light.
5. Finishing. The bonding is trimmed, your bite is checked, and the surface is polished to a natural lustre.

Allow roughly 30 to 45 minutes per tooth. A full upper smile line of six to eight teeth is usually a single longer appointment.

Is composite bonding right for you?

Bonding suits healthy teeth and gums with small to moderate cosmetic concerns. Any decay, gum disease or infection is treated first — cosmetic work placed on an unhealthy foundation does not last.

Something else may serve you better if you grind your teeth heavily, if a tooth is broken down or heavily filled, or if you want a large shade change across the whole smile. In those situations a crown, a porcelain veneer or whitening may be the better route, and we will say so at the consultation rather than sell you bonding that will fail.

How long does composite bonding last, and how do I look after it?

With good care, composite bonding typically lasts three to seven years before it needs polishing, repair or replacement. Composite is a repairable material, so a chip can usually be patched rather than redone from scratch.

• Brush twice daily and clean between the teeth — plaque at the margins is what makes bonding look tired.
• Expect some staining over time from coffee, tea, red wine, curry and smoking. A polish at your hygiene visit lifts most of it.
• Do not bite nails, pens or packaging with bonded edges.
• If you clench or grind, a nightguard protects the work while you sleep.

Composite bonding compared with veneers

Composite bonding is added directly to the tooth in one visit and is straightforward to repair, but it stains gradually and has a shorter lifespan. Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory, resist staining and last considerably longer, but they cost more, take at least two visits and usually involve removing a thin layer of enamel.
